Jewellery is more than just an accessory—it's personal, precious, and often irreplaceable. Whether it’s your everyday pieces or heirloom treasures, storing jewellery correctly is the key to keeping it sparkling, untangled, and damage-free.
At I Dream of Silver, we specialise in elegant jewellery boxes and travel storage solutions designed to protect your favourite pieces. Here are 10 expert tips to help you care for your collection.
Gold, silver, and costume jewellery can react differently to air and moisture. Store your pieces in separate compartments to prevent scratching, tangling, or chemical reactions.
(I even store some of my own pieces in pouches in the jewellery box to ensure they don't get tangled and are kept in tip top condition).
Our One-Drawer Gloss Walnut Jewellery Box has velvet-lined sections perfect for organising your rings, watches, and delicate earrings. It is also lockable for any valuables you may have stored as well.
When you buy your jewellery box, avoid hard surfaces that can scratch your jewellery. There are some nice looking wood boxes that you can buy, however they aren't lined. Look for boxes with soft velour or velvet interiors to gently cushion your items.
All of our jewellery boxes, including the Kandi Large Jewellery Box , are lined with light velour for premium protection. Our Kandi range are available in different colours to ensure they coordinate with your room setting.
We have the Kandi range in large and also a smaller cube version shown below. This is popular with mum's buying for their daughters.
Exposure to light and humidity can tarnish metals and dull gemstones. So it's always a good idea to store your jewellery in a cool, dry place away from windows. Australia is a very sunny place, so don't get caught out on this simple storage rule.
Our jewellery boxes come with secure lids (most are lockable) to keep out moisture and sunlight.
Delicate chains are prone to tangling. Use vertical hooks or individual slots to hang or lay them flat.
Try our Walnut Jewellery Box with Doors and Drawers (locklable), which features hanging hooks in the doors ideal for storing your necklaces. The drawers also have space for laying your necklaces separately.
Pro tip: If you do find some of your pieces get tangled, my go to is a piece of cardboard or paper (dark if possible as the contrast in colours helps to see) and two needles and tweezers. Use the needles to gently loosen the knots in your chains, then use the tweezers to separate. Be gentle here, so as not to weaken the chains.
With ring stacking as a current trend, it's important to ensure your rings are stored well. Rings are best stored upright to protect settings and prevent scuffs. Use ring rolls or slotted trays to hold them in place.
Many of our boxes, like the Elegant Three-Drawer Jewellery Box, include built-in ring holders. This particular box has lots of space for the avid ring collector.
While tempting to store your jewellery in their original boxes they were received in, they often lack the protection or organisation needed for long-term storage. Choose a dedicated jewellery box instead.
Our Walnut Mat finish wood jewellery box has hooks for your necklaces, lots of small compartments for rings and earrings, and watch pillows, that you can also use for bracleets. To be honest, I rarely take my watch of, so my watch pillows are my go to for bracelet storage.
When you're heading for a break, and you are in a hurry to pack, avoid tossing jewellery in with your toiletries, they will tangle. (I write from experience!). Also if you do have any spillages from your skin care or make up, they are straight onto your jewellery.
Our Travel Jewellery Storage Options are a great solution, they are compact, secure, and designed for life on the go. We have a number of different options, some that will pop nicely into your handbag, and others a little larger which will work for that overseas trip you've been looking forward to for months.
Before storing your jewellery, gently wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth to remove oils, fingerprints, and daily grime. This simple habit helps preserve the shine and prevents long-term build-up or damage.
A regular soft cloth will work, or use a silver cloth for your silver pieces.
Pro tip: As an added tip to care for your jewellery, make your jewellery the last item you put on, before heading out, Ie put your pefume on before your necklaces. It will just help the jewellery in the longer run.
Wearing the same jewellery every day can cause faster wear for plated jewellery, while other pieces sit untouched. Rotate your collection regularly to give favourites a rest and enjoy trying different combinations when stacking your pieces.
Review our great collection of earrings here. We also have some lovely necklaces which are great for stacking as well.
Give your jewellery space to breathe—literally. Crowding increases the chance of scratches and tangles. If you like lots of jewellery, use boxes with multiple sections or stackable trays to store your pieces. There is nothing worse than wanting to wear a particular necklace when you are going out, only to find it's going to take you 10 minutes to unravel.
For maximum storage space, our Walnut Jewellery box with three drawers and two doors, really packs a punch.
Your jewellery deserves a home that’s as elegant as it is practical. Whether you’re storing heirloom pieces or everyday staples, a thoughtfully designed jewellery box makes all the difference.
